Google is already planning to launch its own “App Tracking Transparency” framework in 2023, following a model similar to what Apple did in 2020 (which caused us so many headaches ;). This means that, instead of allowing developers to access a unique device identifier to track user activity across other apps, Google will implement a more secure and private alternative that will protect user privacy. This alternative is the Privacy Sandbox. By limiting the tracking of users across apps, Google hopes to improve user privacy and reduce the amount of data shared between apps. Or could this also be a strategy to limit third-party data, as Apple did? (Only time will tell.) Google will allow developers to access aggregated and anonymous user information—such as how often certain apps are used—but not the specific identity of the device. However, this does not mean that Google does not have access to that information; rather, it will give users the option to decide whether they want Google to use that information or not.
Google Introduces Privacy Sandbox for Apps
With “Privacy Sandbox,” Google is joining the fight for user privacy and continues to work on measures to protect user data. This initiative aims to replace third-party cookies with privacy-preserving solutions and give users more control over their information. Privacy Sandbox is an ongoing initiative, and Google has indicated that it will continue to work on it and make adjustments based on comments and feedback from users and developers. Google has been gradually rolling out some of the Privacy Sandbox features since 2020, but has not yet announced a specific date for its full launch in 2023.
