Most app founders or marketing teams believe that it is enough to “open an account” and start promoting. But in today’s mobile ecosystem, where competition is fierce and algorithms are getting more complex, a misconfigured account can cost you weeks of work and hundreds of euros..
When an account is properly prepared, you get:
- Accurate data to optimize your installation campaigns.
- Seamless synchronization with Google Play, App Store and Firebase.
- More effective segmentation of your audiences and better measurement of conversions.
- Greater control over access and security of the team or external agency.
A good configuration not only improves your advertising results: it allows you to better understand your users’ behavior. better understand your users’ behaviorwhich ads generate profitable customers and how to scale your app in a sustainable way.
Prerequisites before creating your account
Before we start with the step-by-step guide to create your Google Ads account, make sure you comply with these basic points:
- Have a corporate Gmail account. Avoid doing it with your personal account. The ideal is to use an official company email that you can then link with Google Play Console, Firebase and App Store Connect.
- Have administrator access to your app. This is essential to be able to link your application on the platforms and avoid errors such as “no app has been detected in your account”.
- Define the currency and the main time zone. If your company operates in several countries, choose the currency and zone where your headquarters are located. This will save you inconsistencies in reporting and conversions.
- Have a valid credit or debit card. Google Ads does not accept prepaid cards in most countries. Check with your bank to verify that they allow international payments to Google.
With these elements in place, you will be able to create a stable account, well configured and ready to launch your first campaigns.
Create your Google Ads account: step-by-step guide to launch mobile app campaigns
- Sign in to Google Ads
Go to ads.google.com and click on “Start now”.. Sign in with your corporate Gmail account.
Google will ask you for basic information about your company (name, website, contact email). If this is your first time using the platform, select the option. “Create an account without a campaign”..
This will allow you to configure everything calmly before launching your ads.
- Complete the company data
At this stage, define correctly:
- Name of your company.
- URL of your app’s website or landing page.
- Time zone and base currency.
Tip: if you operate in different countries, use the currency of your headquarters to unify reports. For example, if your company is based in Spain, select EUR (Euro) even if you also sell in the United States or the United Kingdom.
- Add billing information
Google Ads will ask you to select a payment method (credit card, debit card or monthly billing) and complete the company details.
Avoid using prepaid cards: they can be rejected and lead to account blocking.
In addition, Google usually makes a temporary authorization of 10which will disappear in a few days.
How to set up the billing and time zone correctly in Google Ads
Choosing the right time zone and currency is one of the most important decisions in the initial setup.
An error here can cause reports and metrics to not match your other platforms (such as Firebase or App Store).
Real example: if you have a Spanish app with users in the US and UK, but you set up the account in New York dollars and time zone, your reports might not correctly reflect the local time of your conversions.
Professional recommendation:
- Choose the time zone of the country where your headquarters is located.
- Use the same currency in all measurement systems (Google Ads, Play Console, Firebase).
- If you need reports in multiple currencies, create a separate account per country.
How to invite your team or agency to the Google Ads for Apps account
Giving access to the right people is essential to maintain the security and efficiency of your campaigns.
- Go to Tools → Access and Security.
- Click on the “+” icon to invite a new user.
- Enter your e-mail address (preferably corporate).
- Defines the access level: read, standard, administrator, etc.
- Send the invitation.
When a collaboration ends, revokes access immediately. Maintaining clean accounts avoids security risks and permission conflicts between teams.
How to link your app, YouTube channel and Company Profile
This step is key to connect your campaigns with your app’s digital assets.
Link your application
- Go to Tools → Application Advertising Center.
- Click on “Deploy SDK and link account”.
- Select your Android (Google Play) and/or iOS (App Store) applications.
- Make sure that the account you are logged in with has administrator permissions on both platforms.
If your app is still in beta, Google Ads will not detect it. Wait until it is published or make sure the project ID is correctly linked.
Link your YouTube channel
- Go to Tools → Data manager → Connect product.
- Select YouTube and link your app’s official channel. This will allow you to use your videos in UAC (Universal App Campaigns) campaigns and leverage interaction data for better targeting.
Link your Google Business Profile
If your app is related to a physical business or a brand with a local presence, link your Business Profile (Google Business Profile).
This improves brand consistency, increases trust and can positively influence your remarketing or discovery ads.
Common mistakes when setting up Google Ads to serve ads on mobile apps (and how to avoid them)
Error 1: Failure to correctly link the app
This is one of the most common bugs. If Google Ads does not have permission on your project in Google Play Console or App Store Connect, the app will simply not appear.
✅ Solution: use the same email admin on all platforms – Google Ads, Google Play Console, Firebase and App Store Connect.
Error 2: Incorrect currency or time zone setting
Choosing different currencies in Google Ads and Google Play generates confusing reports and makes financial analysis difficult.
✅ Solution: select the currency of your main site and keep it the same in all systems.
Mistake 3: Not setting up conversion measurement. Without Firebase linked, you’ll only see downloads… but you won’t know how many users complete registrations or make purchases.
✅ Solution: connect Firebase with Google Ads and define key events:
- Registration completed.
- End of tutorial.
- Purchase or subscription.
This will allow you to move from measuring CPI (cost per install) to ROAS (return on advertising investment). ROAS (return on advertising investment)..
Before moving on to campaign setup, it is essential to understand how to measure what happens inside your app.
Most apps only measure installs… and that gives an incomplete picture.
If you want to learn how to measure key events such as registrations, purchases, activation or retention, we recommend you read this article:
This step is key to optimize campaigns oriented to real revenue (ROAS), not just downloads.
Mistake 4: Sharing personal access
Sharing username and password is a bad practice. In addition to being insecure, it can cause permission errors.
✅ Solution: Create individual logins with specific permissions.
Mistake 5: Not verifying the payment method
An expired, prepaid or low-limit card can automatically block your campaigns.
✅ Solution: use a valid credit or debit card and check recurring payments with your bank.
Before investing in campaigns, it is key to make sure your app is built on a solid foundation.
If the app is not well targeted for monetization and retention, even the best Google Ads campaign will not fix the problem.
