What is an APK?

In the world of apps, we come across different terms and concepts that are sometimes simpler than they might suggest.

One of them is this: APK.

At first glance, it seems to be an acronym that hides a complex concept, but you will see below that it turns out to be the opposite.

Shall we start? Press play!

APK stands for Android Application Package and is one of the most repeated terms in any app project.

It is an executable file that contains all the data needed to install and run an Android App. And it is unique for each one of them.

How to download and install an APK on your Android device

The next step, after knowing what an APK is, is to know how to download and install these small files on your devices.

And the truth is that it is very simple. Every time you download an app from the Google Play Store, what you are downloading and installing is an APK file.

These APK downloaders, on the other hand, can also be shared via email, or through the app's Gplay Beta testers or Testing and distribution section of Firebase.

The latter is especially useful in cases where you want to test an app internally, for example, before releasing an update.

In this way, the Android APK allows us to verify whether the app works as expected or not. And to avoid bugs that affect the user experience.

This definition is valid for native apps as well as hybrid and PWA apps. Here you have more information about them: PWA vs hybrid vs native apps.

APK and IPA differences

So far we have talked about what an APK is and we have only mentioned Android, what about iOS? , doesn't it use APK files?

In the case of Apple devices, what we find are files with an IPA extension.

Basically their definition and operation is similar to what we have already mentioned for play store APKs, except that they are specially designed for the iOS operating system.

How to identify a scam or are you on a trusted app?

Hi Misael! To know if an app is a scam or not, you can take into account the following points:

      -Research the developer.
      -Read reviews from other users.
-Check the permissions requested by the app.
      -Visit the developer's official website.
-Check if the app receives regular updates.
      -Research the app online.
-Avoid downloading apps from unofficial sources (i.e. only download from Google Play and App Store).
-Trust your instincts and if something seems fishy, avoid it (If something seems too good to be true or you feel something is not right, avoid downloading the application).
