Google Play vs App Store, what are their differences?

It is well known that in the world of apps, the throne is always contested between two operating systems: Android and iOS.

It is true that there are other operating systems (such as windows phone), but Google and Apple share the lion's share of the pie.

If you have developed or are thinking of developing an app for your business, you may not be considering other operating systems, but you will certainly you must be on Google Play and App Store

If we talk in terms of the market, depending on the country, one system may have more penetration than another, but on a global level it is clear: both must be included in your Mobile and App Marketing strategy if you want to succeed with your app in the market.

We, as mobile marketing agencyWe have first-hand knowledge of the ins and outs of the application stores of both operating systems.

Want to know the differences between Google and Apple?

In which country is Android more popular and in which iOS?

According to StatistThe two most popular operating systems in the world compete for the vast majority of market share, i.e. there are alternative systems, but it is clear that Android and iOS take almost 100% of the market between them.

The distribution is very different between countries, with some countries where iOS is much more popular than Android and vice versa.

As the following infographic shows, compiled from data According to StatCounter, a few years ago Apple managed to achieve market shares of between 10% and 20% in emerging economies such as Brazil and China.

In Spain its market share is currently 18%, but Japan and the United States remain its largest markets, with a share of around 60%.

Comparison between Google Play and App Store

Which app shop has the most apps? 🧐

I'm sure you've asked yourself this question more than once.

If we count the number of applications in each of the Stores we will find that:

  • There are approx. 2.7 million apps on Google Play.
  • There are approx. 1.8 million apps in the App Store.

As we have seen in the US, the preferred operating system is still iOS, but that does not mean that globally it is the preferred operating system.

In fact, at the development level, it is often decided to launch only on one operating system (due to different factors such as the cost of programming), and when this is the case, Android is usually the one chosen. In addition, the system is less restrictive in the app approval process, which is why many developers consider this operating system first.

This is one of the reasons why there is such a big difference between the applications hosted in one store and those hosted in the other.

Quality VS Quantity

As we have seen, Apple Store is still the Store of choice for developers or users, at least in terms of priority, but nevertheless it is Android that has the largest number of hosted applications according to the data we have seen.

Android is looking to gain in the number of apps hosted and Apple is looking to host higher quality apps, which is why they have many more requirements and filters when it comes to publishing the app in the App Store.

Google Play has more appsBut that does not mean that the variety is greater, both cover almost the same needs and there are apps for Android that have almost no downloads at all.

Even so, the most common thing is to find the same app in both App Stores. Finding exclusivity of an app for either Android or iOS is not very common.

Number of app downloads

Google Play has more applications available and with more Android devices than Apple, of course more downloads are made from there.

Even with Apple having this inequality, iOS users are much more willing to pay for an app than Android users.

In addition, it is estimated that iOS users spend 2-3 times more than Android users.

So Apple Store loses in downloads but gains in revenue.

It is important to take this into account in your app business strategy.

As you can see, there is quite a difference between Google Play and App Store, especially in terms of development. In terms of market share, depending on the country, one or the other wins, but what is clear to us is that you must be present in both.

If for certain circumstances (such as budget) you have to decide where to start launching your app, you need a market, competition and target audience analysis to know on which operating system you are most likely to be successful in getting started.

This is a very important decision and the success or failure of the project may depend on it.
